Helwan University
- University description:
- Helwan University is a member of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Universities, officially established on July 26, 1980, by Act No. 70 of 1975, spanning over 350 acres of land. It is the youngest of the three major public universities in Cairo. However, its roots date back to the 19th century during the reign of Muhammad Ali of Egypt, who founded "The Operations School." The disciplines taught at that school later evolved into several institutes that formed the foundation of Helwan University. Although Helwan University is the most recent of Cairo’s three major public universities, it boasts some of the oldest and most prestigious faculties in Egypt and the Middle East. The Faculty of Applied Arts, for instance, was established in 1839, while the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Art Education were founded in 1908 and 1936, respectively. Today, Helwan University offers a diverse range of academic programs across various disciplines, making it a unique blend of historical legacy and modern education.

- Foundation:
- Helwan University, although officially established on July 26, 1980, has deep historical roots that trace back to the 19th century. During the reign of Muhammad Ali of Egypt, an era marked by significant reforms and modernization, "The Operations School" was founded. This institution played a crucial role in laying the groundwork for what would eventually become Helwan University. Over time, several specialized institutes emerged from this foundation, focusing on fields such as arts and crafts, which later merged into the university’s structure. The university is distinctive for integrating traditional disciplines with more modern fields, making it a unique educational hub in Egypt. Despite being the youngest of Cairo’s three main public universities, Helwan University is home to some of the oldest faculties in the region. The Faculty of Applied Arts, established in 1839, stands as a testament to its historical significance. Additionally, the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Art Education, established in 1908 and 1936 respectively, continue to be cornerstones of the university’s academic offerings. Helwan University’s growth reflects a journey of merging history with modernity. Over the years, it has expanded its academic programs to include a wide range of disciplines, embracing both the heritage of its older faculties and the innovation required in today’s educational landscape.
